Travis Layton
Travis, known online as Trav in the Bush, has been capturing the wild for over eight years. Growing up with a deep love for nature, wildlife documentaries, and survival films like Jeremiah Johnson, he was drawn to the outdoors from an early age. This passion led him to leave university early to pursue a career as a professional guide—spending five years leading multi-day hiking, sea kayaking, and dog sledding expeditions across Canada. During that time, his camera was never far from his side, and each adventure deepened his love for capturing authentic, unfiltered moments in nature.
It was on one of these journeys that Travis discovered his true calling: bird photography. A transformative trip to Australia opened his eyes to the mesmerizing world of avian life, and from that moment on, he almost exclusively focused on photographing birds. Whether it’s intimate close-ups of vibrant plumage or dynamic, action-packed shots of birds in flight, Travis’s work reflects a blend of technical precision and genuine passion.
What sets Travis apart is not just his eye for a great shot, but his ability to connect with his audience. With over 200,000 followers across social media, he’s built a community through his engaging, often humorous content. From sharing the raw realities of forgetting an SD card to capturing unexpected wildlife encounters, his videos and skits resonate with both beginners and seasoned photographers alike. Travis’s relatable approach proves that you don’t need the most expensive gear or perfect conditions to capture amazing images—you just need creativity, persistence, and a willingness to laugh at yourself along the way.
Travis’s expertise has led him to collaborate with brands and organizations around the world, including Visit Arizona, Travel Nevada, B&H Photo, Nikon Canada, The Birda App, and The BC Bird Trail. Whether he’s leading a bird photography workshop or producing social media content that breaks the mold of traditional wildlife photography, he combines his extensive guiding experience with a fresh, modern approach to storytelling.
As a Nikon Canada Ambassador, Travis represents a new generation of wildlife photographers who make art out of the everyday, showing that bird photography is not just for the elite but for anyone with a passion for the outdoors. His workshops and digital content are designed to be accessible and inspiring, empowering others to step outside, explore nature, and capture its beauty in their own unique way.
You don’t need to be the most talented photographer—you just need to be relentlessly consistent. Even when the bird flies away or you forget your SD card, go home, grab it, and get back out there.
