Travis Layton
Travis Layton (Trav in the Bush) is a birder and bird photography content creator based in Victoria, British Columbia. For 5 years, Travis worked as a multi-day hiking, sea kayaking, and dog sledding guide across Canada. On his adventures he had many incredible encounters with wildlife and felt compelled to begin documenting these precious moments. It was when Travis bought his first DSLR, a Nikon D3400 that he began his wildlife photography journey.
Travis, like many other photographers, was inspired by the creators he saw on social media. He aspired to not only be a photographer behind the camera, but to perform in front of the camera as well. With the rising popularity of vertical video, Travis began creating short comedy and educational skits relating to the struggles of everyday wildlife photographers. Travis initially dreamed of capturing grizzly bears and mountain lions, however, after a trip to Australia, a country with the highest rate of endemic birds, his perspective shifted. He was fascinated by the countless new birds he identified and captured on camera and discovered that he could better connect to and inspire everyday photographers by focusing on birds. While not everyone may have a bear in their backyard it is with great certainty they will have birds. Naturally, he decided to specialize himself as a birder and bird photographer. After two years and over 100 thousand followers on Instagram, Travis has become one of the few bird photography content creators on the internet. This has opened the doors for Travis to work with many different international organizations such as BC Bird Trail, Visit Arizona, Birda app, and of course, Nikon Canada.
Travis is combining his passions for guiding and bird photography and creating a bird photography workshop business. This year, his first tour, a Bald Eagle photography workshop on Vancouver Island, sold out in the first week! This year, Travis will be traveling across Canada from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland to scout bird photography locations and expand his photography workshops. Travis will then finish off the year revisiting Australia.
In the realm of creativity, it's not about being the best; it's about never ceasing to create. There's extraordinary power in the consistency of your craft.
