Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
IF Lens
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Amazing Lens How does this lens not have 200 TIPA awards, 200 EISA awards, etc.? It's simply THE BEST in its category. I use it 90% of the time on my D800. The build quality, and most importantly the image quality is superb. July 9, 2013
great lens i use this lens on dx body d300s, its perfect lens to own one.... even if you end up moving to FX format nikon, this lens will give you more and more for many years.... September 30, 2012
Outstanding multi-pupose lens. This is an excellent general purpose lens and it THE lens I keep on my D800 body and which I use for nearly all of my work. Rather than repeat the many comments about its virtues that everyone else is already posting, and which I agree with, I thought instead to explain what I use it for and why I find this lens so useful, in the hopes that this information might be more useful to anyone considering purchasing this lens. The sort of work I shoot include pinups, usually shot in a small studio, boudoir images, usually shot on location in a client’s home, food photos, small to medium product photos, catalog photos, and some architectural photos, with a limited amount of wedding and event photography. I found that the focal range of this lens is just about right for all of the above work, except for weddings where I find it desirable to have a second body at hand with a longer lens for some shots. Excepting this, I have found that a maximum 70mm focal length is all that’s needed, and the real strength of this lens for me, is the ability to zoom out when working in tight spaces such as a client’s home. I If you can afford this lens, and if you shoot alot in the 24-70 focal range, you will not regret purchasing this piece of glass. July 4, 2012
"Fast. Versatile. Exceptional" I have this lens for more than a 1 years and it never gave me a disappoint situation. The focus is very good on low light, so is perfect to night photography, further is very beauty to take photos of waterfalls, landscapes, and others...Also this lens is extremely sharp, and I think it's the best lens of Nikon for this propose. Perfect All-Around Lens Great go-to lens. This is the range of focal lengths most often needed. Even though it's heavy, it rests well in your hands. The results are professional all the way. The 24-70 2.8 is right at home as a high-end portrait lens. Images are sharp and with the right camera attached, creativity is unlimited. The lens has a solid & balance feel and is easy to operate in manual mode. It seems to capture light like a sponge even in tough situations making the picture taking range quite wide. I am impressed with the performance and will keep it mounted most of the time. April 4, 2014
