While Nikon has taken great measures to assure the highest possible quality expected of all Nikon products, it has come to our attention that the chassis components of a limited number of COOLPIX L4 cameras were manufactured using an unapproved material. These chassis components do not satisfy Nikon’s standards for strength and durability.
Nikon believes the use of the unapproved material in chassis components, combined with other factors, in some way contributed to five incidents involving COOLPIX L4 cameras sold in Canada. In these five incidents, a screw inside the camera came loose resulting in a short circuit that generated sufficient heat to melt a portion of the rear camera cover, near the LCD panel. All of these incidents can be traced to a group of COOLPIX L4 cameras that were produced over a period of four days. Nikon believes that these five incidents are most likely the result of the use of the unapproved material combined with a yet unidentified event, possibly during production, shipping, or improper use, and at this time does not believe that the problem affected any units other than those manufactured during the identified four-day period.
Nevertheless, as a measure of our commitment to provide customers with only the highest quality products, Nikon has decided to issue this advisory to all owners of COOLPIX L4 cameras purchased in Canada.
Please note there is an eight-digit serial number located on the bottom of the camera. If you possess a Nikon COOLPIX L4 camera with a serial number from 50017674 to 50030095 inclusive – the range of cameras produced using the unapproved material in the period described above – please remove the batteries and send the camera to the Nikon Service Centre following the instructions in the PDF below, or phone the Nikon Service Centre at 1-877-534-9910, Monday to Thursday, 8:45 a.m to 4:45 p.m. and Friday 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Nikon Canada will promptly inspect and, if necessary, repair your camera returning it to you as quickly as possible, at Nikon’s expense.
